  1. My perception about Chinese medicine effectiveness haven't change because no matter what they think, it still an idea that can't be proven in science. True, it might actually help people out,but would anyone actually take a risk in their health to try it? No, anyone would try the safest way which is the eastern medicine. In my opinion, I do believe their effectiveness but you just can't say that without any evidence.

    1. I agree, as Chinese medicine could also have risks in methods like acupuncture and fire cupping. It doesn't seem as safe and guaranteed as western medicine because there's no evidence to prove its effectiveness. The only reason why I would believe in its effectiveness would be because people have been using these methods for centuries and claim them to be effective, otherwise I would say that it's all just based on beliefs.

    2. Yes, I totally agree with you, like you said all those method, doesn't have any evidence to prove, it might be true that people been using these kind of method for over centuries and it worked! But, that was at that time. Now, western medicines are much more promising and well-known than traditional Chinese medicine, no one would go risk their life for something that is said to be effective over centuries ago. Again, I do believe it but, there isn't any evidence that can prove that.

    3. I wholeheartedly concur with your conception of how Chinese medicine is advantageous. Despite what most may say about how Chinese medicine includes practices that are potentially dangerous, it is actually more beneficial than harmful. Some practices may not exactly be practical, but Chinese medicine does not limit to only those practices. There will be definitely useful practices and even if they are not useful, they will not be disadvantageous. Thus, like you, I affirm that Chinese medicine is no doubt effective.

    4. Yes I agree. Chinese medicine has helped people, but at the same time we don't know how and why it helps. Western medicine has been proven by scientists that it works and have been created through numerous trials. Like what others say if it's an emergency, no one is going to take that risk in life to see if it possible works. On the other hand western medicine is proven that it works, so my perception on Chinese medicine remains the same.

    5. I agree with you that chinese medicine might be able to cure pain but it's not proven scientifically that it's effective. Chinese medicine might be able to cure people's pain for a amount of time which makes people think its effective, but it's not able to cure illness for life which is why I personally believe chinese medicine might be able to cure illness but it's not very effective.

  2. Although I had a better understanding of Chinese medicine after the lesson, my perception on its effectiveness didn't change. There may be some potential health benefits such as a better blood circulation from methods like acupressure, but I don't think that it has the ability to cure sicknesses since most of these Chinese medicinal methods don't seem to be scientifically proven to work, so it might only be a superstition.

    1. I strongly agree because there is not enough evidence to support that Chinese Medicine is effective. It is more of a belief in societies. There could be health benefits but, there also could be harms to the body too. But, too much of Chinese Medicine is superstitious which is why I find not reliable enough.

    2. I agree with your argument, because in ancient china people believed that an illness was cause by demonic influence rather than looking at one's general lifestyle and diet. Therefore some of the Chinese practice have no scientific evidence in proving effect of curing a illness but rather a superstition in which they believed was beneficial for them.

    3. I agree with your statement that traditional Chinese practices are simply a superstition, since once again there's no scientific evidence to prove that these practices bring beneficial factors to the individual. Chinese perspective on illnesses are more based upon the spiritual communication between people rather than the individual's lifestyle and the diet they have, which makes the practice overall a belief. Therefore, traditional medicine holds no scientific explanation which makes it simply a superstition.

  4. No, my perception of Chinese Medicine is still the same. I don't think Chinese Medicine is very effective because it has many practices that can be unsafe. The use of herbs and the implementing of animals in Chinese Medicine could be dangerous. You may not know the side effects. I'd say Western Medicine is more effective because it is easier due to advancements in the medical field. Doctors and others in the medical field can associate your symptoms and prescribe a medication. Chinese Medicine may have been practiced for thousands of years but, has more risks than benefits. For example, tui na, acupressure, acupuncture, and fire cupping. They are practices that could more potentially hurt the person than cure their illness.

  5. My perception of Chinese medicine is still the same. Even though Chinese medicine could be effective in relieving some symptoms and improving your overall health , but i believe it is more of a belief that the practices are able to cure a illness.Fire cupping for instance could lead to serious side effects if not properly performed. And some of the Chinese medicine could have ingredients that are generally not safe and could lead to serious side effects for those who have certain medical condition. Therefor I am not convinced that Chinese medicine could cure an illness, as it is just a superstition

    1. I agree with you. I feel like scientist that are experts in human body and medicine and study different sickness will be more effective in terms of curing a diseases or knowing what is beneficial for our body. Also, superstition is a concept that some people practice. I think it will be better if we understand and study what material we are using like the fire cupping and how the process work and whether or not it will be beneficial for our body.

  6. My perception on traditional Chinese medicinal practices remains the same despite today's lesson. I postulate that this practice is simply a belief and has no scientific evidence behind many of these philosophies. Many of these practices can be viewed as a way to relieve certain symptoms however I speculate that the impact on the individual is merely a placebo effect. Similar to American way of curing a paper cut, "mommy kissing your boo boo" is an example of the many common placebo effect that exists. Fire cupping can be one example. Many of the practices are more based on superstition and I personally don't consider it as a way to cure illness.

    1. I agree with your statement because even though many people say that these practices may be effective and believe that this routine actually works, there are still no scientific explanation to prove that it actually works. Even though sometimes these superstition can help some, that doesn't mean that it will be effective on everyone because there are way more people in this world so the number of people that say these practices are effective are still outnumbered by those who say it is not effective.

      Delete
    2. I agree with your statement and example because Chinese medicine is like a superstition people believe without evidence proving it's effectiveness. There are also negative effects that can be caused by these Chinese methods, like from fire cupping which can cause pain and if herbs are not used properly,it can cause nausea.

    3. I agree with your argument because the chinese medical practices is only based on legacy and "interaction between body and universe" or superstition. Thus, there's barely any proves that the pracices actually got rid of diseases. However some might say that it does cure diseases due to no more pain on their body after cupping or other chinese medical practices. But this is because the needle separates and cuts the nerve system making the victim free of pain. But the disease is still there because the needle only separates the nerve system but it didn't get rid of the bacteria or virus out of victim's body.

  7. My perception on traditional Chinese medicine practices remain the same even after today's lesson. Even though many people say that these practices are really effective and can help cure different diseases, these are only theories and there are no scientific explanation behind these philosophies. These are only a few philosophies that ancient people believe that are able to cure diseases but however, there are no evidence or proof to explain these theories.

    1. I agreed because I don't believe that Chinese medicine can cure diseases. Today in the modern day, people are still struggling to find a cure for diseases and even if they do have a cure, it's not as easy as it is. However the Chinese people seem to have a cure for everything and work fast and efficiently, but I don't really believe medicine can cure diseases since most diseases are either cured by vaccine or surgery.

    2. I disagree with you because even though not all Chinese remedies have a scientific explanation, many remedies do. I wouldn't go as far to say that Chinese remedies are just theories because acupuncture targets a person's pressure points and herbal medicine contains herbs like ginseng and ginger which are known to be beneficial to people.

  8. My perception on the effectiveness of Chinese medicine did not change after today's lesson. I feel like the use of Chinese medicine is really delusional. Also, it didn't go through any study or evidence that shows if the medicine is relevant or not. Medicine nowadays have been study and tested. It would be a risk giving medicine that might have unclear effects and results. Scientific study medicine will be more reliable and have more effectiveness.

  9. My perception on traditional Chinese medicine did not change after yesterday's lesson. There's really no scientific proof that Chinese medicine really works and it's unclear if Chinese medicine really cure/ease any illness and pain you have or it might be the illness/pain slowly disappear over time which makes Chinese people think that Chinese medicine work. Also, different medicine has different effect on your body that can be both good and bad but it's unclear if the Chinese medicine you take is either good or bad for you.

    1. My perception of Chinese medicine has not changed at all after learning about it in class. Mainly because it Focuses on balance and the world around. I don't really believe that because there isn't much proof or evidence supporting it. I agree with kelvin because it is unclear that Chinese medicine can help a person. It can be the placebo effect causing many people to think it works.

  10. As a person who aspires to learn Chinese medicine, I do believe in its abilities to heal people. After all, Chinese people did not assimilate Western medicine and medical practices until after about 100 years ago. In Chinese history, most the Chinese survived just fine with Chinese medicine.

Even after learning more about Chinese medicine through this lesson, I do not waver in my belief. There are explanations within Chinese medicine that I conclude as preposterous, however, regardless of that Chinese medicine is definitely beneficial to one's mind and health and can heal illnesses that cannot be healed by Western medicine. For instance, Lyme disease is healed by Chinese herbs. Thus, I negate that Chinese medicine is merely a superstition.

  11. My perception on the effectiveness of Chinese medicine didn't change after having the lesson on Chinese medicine. This is because Chinese medicine is a superstition that people practice and use believing it can cure them. However, there are no evidence supporting that Chinese medicine is effective. Methods used in Chinese medicines and the ingredients used may lead to a negative effect towards a person's health. If Chinese medicine were to be proved able to cure illnesses, it would probably be used and practiced more.

    2. I strongly agree with your position because many people who tend to undergo Chinese medical therapy are often fooled by its temporary results, causing them to be completely unattentive to the negatives outcome from these practices. Let's take fire cupping as an example. While it is believed by some to relieve pain, treat deep scar tissues in the muscles and connective tissue, and reduce swelling, the side effects are worth addressing. According to Jack Raso, "cupping results in capillary expansion, excessive fluid accumulation in tissues, and the rupture of blood vessels." Would you rather undergo a more effective and scientifically proven therapy or participate in a practice that only give you temporary results in addition to negative side effects?

  12. My perception on Chinese medicine hasn't change after this lesson because it is a superstition that people still believe in its curing properties and are willing to take them to feel better. Some hazardous practices include Gua sha because it ruptures capillaries and if done too often can lead to skin breakage and also firecupping,if the cup is too hot it can burn the persons back.Of the ingredients in Chinese medicine some may not have any healing properties like the mushrooms and chrysanthemum since they are not herbs but commonly used foods.

    1. I wholeheartedly agree on your idea of how Chinese medicine is a superstition because people are willing to take these medications because they believe it will heal and even if it doesn't they would still believe it does. I also agree on your statements of how these practices are actually harming people even more and their ingredients are very much food that people eat on the daily.

  13. Although the lesson was informing on the foundations of where Chinese medicine rooted from and allowed me to have a greater understanding of it my perception has not fully shifted, the effectiveness is greatly dependent on the people who believe in its healing.
These medicines were created thousands of years ago with little scientific support and cannot be experimentally justified till this day. Despite the lack of scientific support people still perceived them as very effective because of the small amount of knowledge they knew back then and the flicker of hope it sparked in them that it can heal an ill person. These medications gave people something to believe in during times of trouble and who wouldn't want to feel hopeful in healing while their sick?

    1. I strongly agree with you Valerie, Chinese medicine back then was a flicker of hope and had people thinking of it as effective treatment as this was created thousands of years ago when real effective medicines weren't present so believing what they had at that time was normal in that if they took this medicine they will feel better.

  14. My perception of the chinese medicine didn't changed even if I viewed this video or after the chinese medicine lesson, because the chinese medical practices have little or no support of science that it actually helped people. But instead the medical practices have been supported by legacy and the myths of the "interaction of universe and the human body". Therefore I can conclude that chinese medical practices are useless due to lack of scientific proves and ineffective due to cannot cure specific diseases. But some people might say that the practices are useful due to it actually cure diseases. However, pracices such as needle and cupping only damages and separate your nerve cells on certain part of your body making you free of pain. But the disease is still there the practice only free you away from pain by cutting your nerve cells but it didn't get rid of diseases.

    1. In my perception I believe Chinese medicine isn't that effective if it isn't proven scientifically that it works. Chinese medicine is base on theory's and believes that probably might not be true. Like what Mr. Shi said, if a doctors says that the Chinese medicine actually works, that's enough to release all stress and perhaps cure you.

  15. My perception of Chinese medicine hasn't changed even after the lesson because even though chinese medicine is able to cure pain it's not really effective. It cures the pain but just for a amount of time. I've seen and known people who continuously uses chinese medicine for many years which proves the medicine only heals the pain for an amount of time and not for life. Therefore, I believe Chinese medicine is merely just a superstition because it isn't proven to be able to fully cure pain.

    1. While I do agree that some pain coping methods only lasts a certain amount of time, there is also the fact that there are medicines developed to have worked on certain illnesses. Yes, some are superstitions, but some do in fact work, just not scientific proven yet. Plus temporary pain relief is better than a potential drug overdose of painkillers.

    2. I agree with Juan Man because I've also experienced and seen other people replying on chinese medicine to make whatever sickness they have to go away. When I was younger I used to have 鼻炎。My mom heard from relatives about how eating 中药 makes it go away for good. Instead, it only made me feel better for like a month or so. Afterwards my mom wanted me to eat more and more but I refused because first of all it tasted nasty and second of all I wanted to try the nose spray that they sell in pharmacies that also claims to get rid of 鼻炎. Every night I would use it and after I was done with it, my 鼻炎 hasn't came back ever since. From this, it can prove that chinese medicine only cures a sickness for a short amount of time and not forever.

  16. Even after watching the videos and paying attention to its thorough explanations, my perception of the effectiveness of Chinese medicine still does not change. In Chinese medicine, it may be proven to actually work, however, there are a few concepts that are possibly superstitious. Even when some concepts are superstitious, some do actually work, though not scientifically proven so. In effectiveness, Chinese medicine can be used to treat common sicknesses, however if there are more sever ones, the best way is to use scientifically proven methods to prevent the illnesses.

  17. My perception on the effectiveness of Chinese medicine did not change even after the lesson on Chinese medicine because there is little to no scientific proof behind the effectiveness of the practice and the results are only temporary. Let's take acupuncture as an example. Many people who undergo the practice tend to revisit their doctor several times as the pain continues to come back even after multiple attempts. While the pain is often numbed after the therapy, it does not mean your illness is truely cured. The lose of pain results from the nerve cells that were damaged during the process and this therefore, often leads people into thinking that their illness is actually "cured." While Chinese medicine may not be the answer to curing illnesses, it is definitely a technique that you can count on for temporary results.

  18. my perception on the effectiveness of chinese medicine did not change after the lesson because no one can actually prove that it cures diseases completely. it may make the situation better and let you live a few more years but overall, people should not rely on chinese medicine if you want to completely get better. In chinese medicine, the elements are wood, fire, metal, water and earth. As of right now in modern times, non of these elements are actually proven by science that it actually works. Because chinese medicine was invented way back then , their medical technology and mind isn't as great as ours now. As I said before, chinese medicine made people feel better in situations but not cure them completely, people back then may think that just because they feel better, chinese medicine definitely works on improving their health.

  19. My perception on the effectiveness of Chinese medicine has changed slightly after having the lesson on Chinese medicine. I still believe that Chinese medicine is mostly superstition as there is no proof behind certain beliefs like the concept of 气,阴阳,and五行. However, I do believe there is some truth to Chinese medicine. Remedies that can be back by science such as acupuncture which targets pressure points and herbal medicine which uses herbs proven to be beneficial to people. Overall, I think Chinese medicine has some superstition but also holds truth after watching the video.
