In 2000 and 2016,the candidates with less popular votes in presidential elections went on to become presidents because of Electoral College (选举人团,xuǎn jǔ rén tuán) system. The founding fathers of this country established system of Electoral College to ensure the rights of small states (EX. will of states such as California doesn't always dictate), but some argued that circumstances have changed. Do you think Electoral College should be abolished , why or why why not?

I don't think they should be abolished because first, this system prevent dictatorship for the right of the smaller state like what you wrote so, there isn't any reason you shouldn't. Moreover, this system has been around forever so everyone is used to this system and they agree that this system is efficient. If suddenly, people abolish electoral college, there definitely be a drastic change in the US.
ReplyDeleteI think that the electoral college should be abolished because the fundamental policy of USA is "for the people and by the people" and if majority of the citizens don't agree upon an policy or leader then they can just get rid of him/it. But the electoral college system violate this policy because even though majority disagrees but a few politician agrees, the minor number wins. Therefore contradicting the US policy that shape the US. So it should be abolished. Also even though it will have a drastic change it will be a good change.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the electoral college should be abolished because the citizens should decide who should be their president not some electoral votes. Also because of this policy, there had been many riots and violence happening ever since trump took office. Although this would change America as a whole, atleast the term "majority rules" will come to use.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the electoral college should be abolish because it goes against the basic democratic policy by making the vote of one citizen value more than the vote of another this takes away our basic freedom of electing our president. The founding fathers established the electoral college because during that time many people were not educated but now anyone can self educate themselves through social media. Additionally if there weren't electoral college the candidates would focus more on persuading voters instead of focusing on the statewide polls
ReplyDeleteI think that the Electoral College should not be abolished. I feel like making sure that the rights of the smaller states should be included in the government and presendential debate. The main reason is because of how the rights of the people in the smaller states counts and how they should have a saying or opinion in the government. Also, this system was out for a long time and the system had been working out since the founding father. Although bigger state may have more people but the smaller states may also have a large population.
ReplyDeleteI think that the electoral college should be abolished because it doesn't allow all the votes of the population to be counted. Although it was created to protect the smaller states, the larger states now have a disadvantage as more electoral votes are granted to smaller states, which is disproportional to their population. Because of this system, the votes of certain states are of more value compared to others, which goes against the idea of democracy.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the electoral college should be abolished because regardless of the fact that it was intended to ensure that different states all have a chance to participate in the presidential election process, it is not right that popularity votes are ignored. Popularity votes are essential in the election process, but recently, it doesn't seem to be the case. The voice of the citizens are often ignored. If that is the case, is the United States still a democratic country? Of course not. People need to be given the right to make their own decisions on who their president should be, not by some background manipulations. The true definition of the term "democracy" is slowing missing its target in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteI think that the electoral college should be abolished because even though it make sure that all states are able to vote in the election, the popularity votes are a major part to the election. This is because these are the votes in which the people of the United States are voting for the president in which they believe are best fit to be a president. Because of this system, the votes wouldn't really effect the election no more and this is not fair. This also goes against the ideas of democracy in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI think that the electoral college should be abolished because it doesn't get the vote of the population. If 5 big state vote for president number 1 and 20 small states for president number 2, president number 1 will win because the five big states have more electoral vote than the small states. However the majority wanted president 2 making the electoral unfair. Therefore the vote of the majority was not counted, which goes against the definition of democracy.
ReplyDeleteI think that the electoral college should be abolished because it has some flaws/unfair factor in it. Candidates would have to target states with most electoral votes and if they succeed in doing this then they are most likely to win regardless of popularity votes that may stack in the other candidates favor, the voices and decisions of the people should more valuable than the states decision to give the electoral votes to candidates.
ReplyDeleteThe electoral college has been used since the beginning of the presidential system because it was created by our founding fathers, who believed that it provided equality for the smaller states. However, with this system providing the rights for the smaller states it lacks to provide equality for the people of America themselves. Yes, this system should be abolished because it mutes the voices of the majority which is rigged because a new president is suppose to provide for the people, how will he do that when the majority do not agree with him and his beliefs? The electoral college is old and is time for the popular votes to determine our next president, it is time for the voices of America to be heard.
ReplyDeleteFor the sentence "The electoral college is old and is time for the popular votes to determine our next president, it is time for the voices of America to be heard." I am missing "it" infront of "is time..."
DeleteI personally object the fact that electoral college should be kept, because it goes against the fundamental rights of American Citizenship. If more electoral votes are granted to the smaller states, the system will slowly lose its value on the phrase "democracy". I believe the selection of the president should be on the hands of the people and its not right to disregard the popular votes. In addition, more and more people will be protesting against something that they didnt choose which is something that happening right now, only triggering more and more chaos. Its quite hypocritical, where the electoral votes say to make things more jsutified, rather it doing quite the opposite.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that electoral college shouldn't be kept. While it is a positive thing for the smaller states to be getting more representation, however, electoral votes give them an advantage over the major states. America's founding fathers organized the electoral college to be more fair, but it actually goes against the very meaning of democracy itself and what it means to the people. Democracy is involving the people, and that means it is the people that get to choose who they want to lead them and what decisions to make. If a presidential candidate were to be determined by electoral votes, that means the popularity vote does not matter, which also means the majority does not matter. If the majority is not heard, it would ensue disagreements, and frankly it is the opposite of "United States of America".
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe that this system should be abolished. When you have an electoral college not everyone's vote is counted. This system may be advantageous for smaller states, but it is directly defying the meaning of democracy. If this system continues to govern the decision of who should be president and vice president, then what are the rights to vote for every citizen for?
ReplyDeleteI disagree. In the electoral college every citizen's vote is counted. Each state counts the votes to determine who wins the electoral votes for that state. The system is not defying democracy, because each vote is counted in the state where the voter lives.
DeleteI do not think that the electoral college should be abolished. The electoral college was designed to make sure that states with smaller populations have more power than than their population might indicate. Each state has at least 3 electoral votes, and presidential candidates must win enough states to win 270 electoral votes. This makes it more likely that candidates will need to campaign in the smaller states to win, and that is better for the country as a whole. The Constitution can be amended if enough states vote to change on the Electoral College System.
ReplyDeleteI think the electoral college should be abolished. The popular vote is there for a reason. It is to state the people opinion. The electoral college only based on how much people in one state, so smaller states who support a candidate won't get as much votes.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe electoral votes should abolished because even though it's created for smaller states to have as much power as bigger states, it's not what the majority of the population wants when one has more popularity votes than electoral vote. One's idea shouldn't be represented by what most people in the state they are in wants, they should be able to represent themselves. If people aren't able to represent themselves, lots will be opposing the decision made, just like Donald Trump becoming president, more electoral votes went for him but not popular votes and therefore many oppose him to become president of the US. To sum up, electoral votes might not represent what the majority wants, therefore it's should be abolished so what the marjority wants is what's given.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the electoral college should be abolished. This is because the votes should be based on the majority votes of all people. Even though the founding fathers created the electoral college for a equal voting system, it is shown in the past that this system has failed. For example, George W. Bush won presidency against Al Gore, but Al Gore had the most popular votes. Similar to today, due to the electoral votes Donald J Trump won against Hilary Clinton when she had the most popular votes. Therefore, the voting system should change so then each person's vote is included.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe that the electoral college should be abolished because at the end of the day it's depends on the people. They should have the rights to pick and choose whoever they want as their president. Throughout the 50 states it's unfair to have the smaller states contain more power when voting for president and make other states that don't want that person to be president, president. For instant Donald trump. He gathered more electoral votes to make him president even though Hillary got more popular. This is unfair to many people because half or more of the US nation doesn't want him to rule over them. If electoral votes was a good thing you wouldn't see people protesting and setting up rally's to get rid of Donald trump because people don't want him. So I believe electoral college should be abolished for good
